| What do most people think of when
they think of Baltimore? John Waters movies? Barry Levinson movies. The
Baltimore Orioles, the Ravens, the former Baltimore Colts? Blue crabs?
The TV show Homicide? The place where Babe Ruth was born? Where Edgar Allan
Poe died? How about Fort McHenry, where the great big flag flew during
the British Invasion of the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to
write that song that is so difficult to sing? Or maybe Wallis Simpson,
the Baltimore divorce who inspired the King of England to chuck the crown.
H. L. Mencken? Blaze Starr? Eubie Blake? Or one of the worlds most peculiar
local accents, hon? How about Johns Hopkins Hospital? Or Camden Yards?
Did you know that London Fog coats came from Baltimore? Or that Frank Zappa
came from Baltimore? Do you know the song The Streets of Baltimore (or
can you at least hum a few bars)? Can you name the Strawberry Alarm
Clocks follow-up to their big hit Incense and Peppermint? Answer: Barefoot
in Baltimore.
I wont go on. But the point is simple. If youve never been to Baltimore, youve never been to Baltimore. I recommend the real thing, of course. Second to that, many of the books of Anne Tyler, Laura Lippman, John Barth, Stephen Dixon and myself (to name five) have big and little bits of Baltimore in them. And thirdly, you can click on to some of the sites below and take a virtual tour of Charm City, hon. |
